Stafford Lake Field Trip Reflections
- Describe the ecological problems of the stream at Stafford Lake: Stafford lake is a man-made lake with a stream that is also man-made because of this. The stream is getting increasingly straight, as opposed to meandering towards the lake. Because of this, the water is rushing toward the lake too fast, creating a large canyon caused by the too fast erosion. Since Stafford Lake is a huge part of Novato's drinking supply, erosion can dirty the water, and destroy many aquatic and land animals' homes.
- Describe the components of the Marin County Parks Project that are addressing these problems: Some of the components of this project were removing invasive species and changing the streams speed and making them meander so there is less erosion.
Aramburu Island Shoreline Protection and Ecological Enhancement Project
The project site is located in Richardson Bay, a short boat ride from our center in Tiburon. Want to save the birds from some toxic waters. The Enhancement Plan was designed to improve aquatic, wetland, and upland habitats for a range of local species, stabilize the rapidly eroding eastern shoreline, and help the island and surrounding communities adapt to sea level rise.
Castro Park Playground
At first, Castro park was a little league baseball field, but a few years ago, was abandoned. Marin county parks are looking to rehabilitate the area and put in back into use. In 2003 they were able to turn it into a 1.5% acre park. Now, it needs some structural improvements. They are going to renovate.
Integrated Pest Management
The board of supervisors has passed a new pesticide. Pests have been invating native species in wildlife areas. They are eating the plants and making them unhealthy. With the passing of these newer, cleaner pesticides will help preserve the plants in the wild.
McNears Beach
They are working on a new master plan for Mcnears Beach. They are making a long term planning document to determine the future of Mcnears Beach, and make it better.
Paradise Beach
There will be future direction of park facilities, improvements, and programs. Public participation in this project is important to us, it will make the renovation faster and more effective. Marin County Parks contracted with SWA Landscape Architects for development of a master plan for Paradise beach park on the Tiburon peninsula.
Stafford Lake Bike Park
Stafford Lake Bike Park is the North Bay’s first public bike park. Many people came together and used this open space to create a very intense bike park. A non-profit called the Friends of Stafford Lake Bike Park was formed specifically to support fundraising and volunteer efforts to build and maintain the bike park. The bike park project has received $732,000 in donations and sponsorship's in the form of more than 200 contributions, from large corporations to local kids.
Stafford Lake Park Master Plan
A park master plan is a comprehensive, long-term planning document that guides the future direction of park facilities, improvements, and programs. We will shape the kinds of facilities and recreational opportunities the community wants and needs now, and to forecast future trends. The 139-acre park represents the largest upland area in the lineup of our park and is also unique in its rural setting. The park currently has opportunities for fishing, group picnicking, large events up to 5,000 people, hiking, and disk golf.
