Dragons of Eden
2. As a group we discussed this wonderful book in great detail. We thought that the author was arguing the search of quantitative meaning of intelligence. This amazing book is based mainly on evolution and based for an audience of interested people learning many great science topics. Overall my group and I thought that the author did a superb job of arguing and making his points clear throughout the whole book.
3. When reflecting on some of the many topics with my group we came to the conclusion that the book had a few main ideas such as a fairly large section on how brain and body mass ration can be a great indicator of intelligence. We learned that humans are owner to the largest ratio but we are closely followed by dolphin. Other mains points are the human brain, and the big bang theory.
4. There are many new ideas that we were introduced to by reading and discussing this book. For example, humans have the largest brain to body mass ratio. The second on the list is dolphins, this explains why humans and dolphins are some of the smartest animals to our knowledge.
Our brain has a core that is similar to reptiles.
Our brain has much more rational thought then other animals, that’s a main difference in humans from other animals.
5. This book was truly amazing. This super complex book had many very strange and new words. The Dragons of Eden truly helped increase my vocabulary in many ways with the massive amounts of strange unfamiliar words. The words that I didn’t recognize and wanted to learn more about were the ones below.
Evolutionary Biology- Evolutionary biology is a subfield of biology concerned with the study of the evolutionary processes that produced the diversity of life on Earth
Anthropology- The science of human zoology, evolution, and ecology
Neocortex- A part of the cerebral cortex concerned with sight and hearing in mammals, regarded as the most recently evolved part of the cortex
6. This book explained lots of new things to us, but there are some things that we are still having trouble understanding. We would like a further explanation on what the cosmic calendar is and how it works
7.After reading half of the book and deeply discussing several intriguing facts me and my group came to a well thought out conclusion. We decided that our favorite fact was that the brain and body mass ratio and how you can illedgidly tell the intelligence of a species using only that.
8. In this non fictional novel Carl Sagan gives lots of information about the human brain and intelligence. Unlike most non fiction novels, “Dragons of Eden” is fairly readable. It introduces many new topics that not many teens know much about. In this book, Sagan argues that brain to body mass ratio is often related to intelligence. Humans have the highest brain to body mass ratio, this means our brain is the biggest compared to our body’s among all animals. Second on the list, below humans is dolphins. Dolphins are one of the smartest animals on the planet, which helps show that brain to body mass ratio is usually a good way to measure quantitative intelligence.
This book dives deeply into the evolution of intelligence in humans. By using several areas of science like anthropology, evolutionary biology, computer science, and psychology. Sagan is able to give the reader a unique perspective on evolution from many different viewpoints, and bassists. Throughout the book he proves evolution in all these areas and is extremely thorough to make sure the reader is able to completely understand his views on the evolution of intelligence. Another large topic that Sagan portrays in this book is dreams, and the necessity of sleep. Sagan talks about how sleep and more specifically dreams have evolved with time. He also discusses the importance of sleep and dreaming in the modern human.
“ Dragons of Eden” gets its title from the relationship of early man against predators. Particularly reptiles, because they can be very dangerous and very scary looking to some. This fear in reptiles led to myths and tales about dragons, snakes and other feared reptiles.
After reading and thoroughly discussing this book me and my group came to a conclusion. We believe that this well written novel has some extremely useful knowledge, and can be helpful when trying to convince someone about the occurrence of evolution. We also were able to see that we had all developed a better understanding for evolution, and can now look at evolution from many contrasting areas of science. Personally we believe this book to have no specific targeted audience but it is mostly for early adults and up due to its fairly hard to understand concepts. We rate this book 8/10. and strongly advise it to anyone who would like to further understand the evolution of intelligence and how humans brains have developed from early primates.
